Mythical Creatures of Maine – Christopher Packard

You know you can’t go to a cryptozoology convention and not end up with a book or two to be used at some point in the future as inspiration for adventures yet to come. That was the case with Mythical Creatures of Maine which we bought signed directly off the author and let me tell you it was a treat! As someone whose family comes from the deepest woods of Maine, and who has loggers somewhere in the family tree, I was delighted and charmed to see so many cryptids of days past coming to light in the pages.

This book is beautifully illustrated and narrated in a tongue-in-cheek sort of way, as is custom when talking about the elusive snipe, or the unfortunate kaput bird who has one wing smaller than the other causing it to only fly in circles. I don’t know if these stories of big cats with multiple tails or alligators in the northern woods have any glimmer of reality within them, but I feel like their colorful stories and even more bonkers names were likely told with great enthusiasm around the campfires of yore.

Would I get thus book as a serious cryptid hunter? No. Would I get it to fulfill a deep-seated need for odd humor and whimsy? Absolutely. Just delightful all around. And if you’d like to flip through the pages of this rather wistful tome you can get it at Mythical Creatures of Maine (And yes, since I am a starving author myself I have partnered with Amazon and get a small commission every time someone clicks this link and buys the book so please do so and make TWO authors deliriously happy!)
