Layers of Deception – Leo James

Now I am back into familiar territory. I have always loved to sink my teeth into a good techno-thriller. This is Leo James debut book and I must say – bravo! He pulled it off!

This is a fast-paced novel swirling with intrigue that grabs your attention with a dazzlingly complex cast of characters. Basically it’s about a small UK based business that tries to make a deal with an Asian market only to find that they are accidentally complicit in some seriously shady business. When they try to point this out they get deeper and deeper into the muck. And when people start getting whacked… well you’re halfway through and unable to put the book down!

This book is written very much like science fiction used to be written – it is at least 90% dialogue. This admittedly has its limitations. For one it means there’s a lot of rehashing of details and events. And even though there’s a large cast of characters there’s only so much you can learn about them through dialogue and the random descriptions scattered throughout don’t say much either. However if you like books that are a tinge emotionally disconnected, as I often do, this is actually a plus. Another plus is the fact I wasn’t confused by all the techno babble. I was actually able to follow all their chatter about the dark web and onion routers and everything else. So maybe I even learned something!

I would highly recommend this to anyone who likes thrillers, techno-dramas, or old school sci-fi.
